September Featured Recipe: Bacon Brown Sugar Smokies

The end of summer is here, and that can mean only one thing at Dura-Shine Headquarters – football season! We’re sharing a quick and easy game day recipe sure to make your game watching sweet.

1 pound bacon

1 (16 ounce) package of little smokie sausages

1 cup brown sugar (to taste)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut the bacon into thirds and wrap a strip around each sausage. Secure the wrapped sausages with toothpicks and arrange on a baking sheet. Sprinkle liberally with brown sugar (the more the better!) and bake until the bacon is crisp and the brown sugar has caramelized, roughly 30 minutes.

5 Quick and Easy Stain Fighting Tips

Don’t let stains get you down. Keep these simple tips in mind to keep your garments looking fabulous.

Tip #1: Do not rub; blot! Blotting will help pull the stain away from the fabric. Rubbing will push the stain into the fabric and may cause further damage.

Tip #2: After you’ve washed the stained item, double check to make sure the stain has been removed BEFORE placing it in the dryer. Adding heat to a stain can make it a permanent fixture on your favorite garment.

Tip #3: Stains can transfer. Make sure you wash your deeply stained items separately to avoid stains jumping ship to your mark-free clothing.

Tip #4: Check your laundry for stains before washing. It may seem like no brainier, but often stains go unnoticed. Once they make their way through the wash and into the dryer they can make a lasting home on your clothes. Giving a quick once-over before dropping your clothes in the wash can help prevent stains from setting.

Tip #5: Treat right away. Don’t wait until you “get the chance” to remedy the situation. The longer a stain sits, the harder it can be to remove. Applying a treatment right away can make all the difference when trying to save your favorite shirt.

Dura-Shine Clean Sergio Martinez Memorial Scholarship Winner Selected

Dura-Shine Clean is honored to announce Isabel Velasquez as the recipient of the 2013 Dura-Shine Clean Sergio Martinez Memorial Scholarship.

Washington State University Tri-Cities selected Isabel for her academic achievements and personal growth through organizations like the Future Farmers of America. Members of Dura-Shine Clean had the pleasure of meeting the beneficiary at a special scholarship recognition event hosted by WSU Tri-Cities at the Three Rivers Convention Center. Ms. Velasquez was also awarded a WSU Tri-Cities Columbia Crimson Alumni Scholarship and is planning on pursuing a career in Education.

This is the first year Co-founder and CEO Carlos Martinez started the $1,000 scholarship. “I’ve always wanted to find a way to honor my brother who passed in 1990,” commented Carlos. “Knowing that Dura-Shine Clean, and the Martinez family, can help pave the way for someone to pursue their dreams felt like a perfect tribute.”

The Dura-Shine Clean Sergio Martinez Memorial Scholarship is available annually at Washington State University Tri-Cities, to assist students pursuing higher education. Students eligible for this scholarship must be an incoming freshman, maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and enrolled full-time. Honoring the Martinez’s culture, eligible students must also be a member of an underrepresented heritage or group. Don't Let Technology Injure You at Work

Computers are ubiquitous in today’s workplace, and that means computer-related injuries and heath issues are more common than ever. Take care of yourself with this advice:

Take a break. Let go of the mouse and step away from the keyboard once every hour or so. Stretch your arms, hands, fingers, and relax your muscles for a few minutes. Move around to get your blood flowing.

Adjust your equipment. Make sure you’re not straining to reach your keyboard or view your screen. Position your chair so you can type comfortably with your keyboard at elbow height and your arms straight.

Watch the glare. A computer screen that’s too bright, or reflects too much light, can cause eyestrain and other vision problems. Adjust the brightness or attach a filter to minimize glare.

Keep the right distance. When switching back and forth between your screen and any source document you’re working with, keep both items at the same distance from your eyes to reduce strain from changing your focus constantly. A document holder next to your monitor is best.

Get the right chair. A good chair should be adjustable and supports your lower back, preventing back problems.
